The Coromandel Introduction

There are many beautiful places in the world - only a few are special.

With sparkling azure waters, white sandy beaches, tree lined coastal roads and secluded bays just waiting to be explored, The Coromandel, is one of those special places - breathtaking and unforgettable. Dramatic landmarks and a unique thermal beach with hot water bubbling up from deep inside the earth are just some of the many surprises that await on this coastline of contrasts.

Looking east across the Hauraki Gulf from Auckland, the north of The Coromandel Peninsula can be seen as a series of enticing blue peaks, cloaked in a regenerating native forest providing a beautiful backdrop to the sea.

Although only two hours drive from Auckland , and the first major destination on the Pacific Coast Touring Route, The Coromandel feels like it's a world away. The dramatic coastline framed with native Pohutukawa trees on the western side and beautiful white sandy beaches on the east, offers endless opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming. The towering peaks, present a haven for tramping and mountain bike enthusiasts, or for those who simply wish to commune with nature.

The protected forests and marine parks are easily accessed, giving a sense of exploration in a unique environment. Take a guided rainforest walk or a short coastal ramble, bird watch, or marvel in quiet awe of a giant 1000 year old Kauri tree. If you are looking for a holiday where nature takes central stage, The Coromandel is the ideal destination for you.

Hot Water Beach is a stop not to be missed. For it is here that you can dig your own thermal hot pool on the beach. Relax and soak, but be warned. Only dig at low tide for if you dig at hight tide you will not find the natural water spring located beneath the sand.

Or, for an unrivalled backdrop, The Coromandel features more than ten superb golf courses, each attractive and well suited to top class play. The Coromandel's uncrowded courses where the view is often the  hazard, provide a challenge for even the most accomplished golfer. Each course offers something distinct, be it heroic design, a unique signature hole or Bob Charles design, a true links  course - dry underfoot all year round.
